André Pihl is an architect and owner of his architecture and design company established in 2018. His work is best known for its minimalist aesthetic. Whilst private houses have remained at the core of the work, projects have spanned a wide range of scales and building typologies.

Behind the door in a house by André Pihl you will find yourself at home. If the disposition makes you bewildered, as the bat-shaped plan of House in Karlshamn, the confusion is gone when you enter the hall. The architecture of the house guides you thru a sequence of spaces of universal qualities. The proportions and the rhythm of the dwellings follow a century-old, if not millennial-old scheme. Yet, there is something completely new and intriguing about the few houses that Pihl have presented so far. The idea of a loop as in House in Karlshamn for example; you can enter the house by two separate doors that brings you into two different compartment which unite in a common space in the core. Or the layout of House of Straw, where the bathroom is placed between the public domain and the bedroom. The H-shaped plan for the communications in the small House in Baskemölla is another of these idiosyncrasies that may seem odd at a first glance, and then perfectly make sense. This is how architecture evolves. By adding new qualities to ancient wisdom. Words by Rasmus Wærn.
